Joanna Newsom Song Tournament Format of the Fifth Round
Firstly, please note that the "Supplementary Round" is still open - you can still vote between Go Long and Our Anniversary up until I get home tomorrow. I know it's a bit of a formality, but as ann quite rightly said, I wasn't ready to start Round Five just yet anyway.
I am just posting this to advise how I have decided to format the Fifth (and Final) Round.
1. Timescale Please be sure to come back regularly, because in this round you are invited to vote in five different sets of pairings, which will be posted at 4-day intervals. I intend to post new pairings for your votes at a minute to midnight BST on each of the following dates: Pairings 01, 02 & 03 - 23:59 on Saturday 23rd April 2011 Pairings 04, 05 & 06 - 23:59 on Wednesday 27th April 2011 Pairings 07, 08 & 09 - 23:59 on Sunday 1st May 2011 Pairings 10, 11 & 12 - 23:59 on Thursday 5th May 2011 Pairings 13, 14 & 15 - 23:59 on Monday 9th May 2011 Votes for each pairing close at the times stated above for the posting of the next set (regardless of whether I hit my timings or not). The votes for the final set of three pairings will close at 00:01 on Saturday 14th May 2011 (well, we couldn't have Friday 13th, could we?!) after which I will post the final results.
2. Composition Each of the six finalist songs will be represented in one of the pairings in each set. No song will be eliminated during the Fifth Round. I ask you all to vote for one song in each pairing (and remember to include the Pairing Number, too, for my ease in collating the votes). Then, come back a few days later to cast votes in the next set of pairings, and so on. If you miss a set, it doesn't matter - every vote counts in each pairing, but it is not essential to vote each time. If you cannot decide between two songs in a particular pairing, just say so, and I will count it as ½ a vote for each one.
3. Presentation Each pairing will show two songs (obviously), presented in a random order, and the order of the pairings within a set will also be random. I aim to include a short 'review' of each song in each pairing. Some of you have been kind enough to respond to my requests for these, and others I know are still working on them. If the latter is the case, please see if you can get them to me over the next couple of days: I have enough to start at the moment, but not enough to carry this on all the way through. Also, if you are not one of the people I asked to submit song reviews, but you feel you would like to, I'd love to receive them - please send them by Private Message to me, and aim for 80-120 words if possible. They will remain anonymous until the end of the tournament, when I will give due credit to everyone who has kindly sent in pieces (unless you ask me to keep your identity a secret). I can't guarantee to use every review, as I need exactly 5 reviews for each of the six songs - but at the moment not one song is 'overscubscribed'! As a last resort, I will see if I can find online reviews from outside of this thread or outside MilkyMoon ... or I might even have to write something myself, but I am trying to avoid that as it doesn't seem quite 'fair' somehow. If I receive more than I need, I will post the unused ones at the end, or double-up, whilst trying to maintain a balance between the length of each review in each pairing.
4. Scoring The winning song in each pairing will receive 10 points; if it is a tie both songs will receive 5 points each. A further 10 bonus points will be divided between the songs in each pairing in proportion to the number of votes they receive. I will round this to the nearest whole number, but will maintain the full decimal in my workings in case it becomes important. This means that the most points available for each song in each pairing is 20 (10 for winning the pairing, and a further 10 if it received 100% of the votes). I tied pairing will give each song 10 points each (5 + 50% of 10 bonus points). Each song will also bring forward a maximum of 10 bonus points, reflecting their performances in Rounds 1 to 4. I have not decided the exact formula for this yet. At the end of the voting on each set, I will post a 'league table' showing the standings at that stage.
I hope that all makes sense ... but even if it doesn't just remember all you have to do is to cast your votes on the latest set of pairings posted. Once a new set is up, the previous set is closed for voting.

Thank you to all those people (17) who took the trouble to vote in the Supplementary Round, which is now closed. Yes, it was a foregone conclusion, and something of a stopgap, but I feel happy that we have now covered every known song to which Joanna Newsom has made some sort of recorded audio contribution. It also allowed me a few days to get Round Five prepared. For the record, the result was:
Group 1: Go Long 16.1 / Our Anniversary 0.1
Go Long therefore takes its rightful place in Round Five. This means that all six of the songs that started as seeds 1 to 6 prior to Round One have made it safely through.
In fact, 34 songs were seeded (ones that had been listed as favourites in postings I could find), and – whilst I don’t want to reveal the order of numbers 1 to 6 while the Tournament is still ongoing – it cannot do any harm now to reveal the seedings of the other 26 songs, which were as follows:
7 ‘En Gallop’ 8 Swansea 9 Monkey & Bear 10 Have One On Me 11 Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie 12 Kingfisher 13 Good Intentions Paving Co. 14 Baby Birch 15 Colleen 16 This Side Of The Blue 17 Sadie 18 What We Have Known 19 Inflammatory Writ 20 Sprout And The Bean 21 On A Good Day 22 Easy =23 Erin / Soft As Chalk 25 Esme =26 Autumn / Flying A Kite / Peach, Plum, Pear 29 Does Not Suffice 30 Occident 31 '81 =32 Bridges And Balloons / Ca' The Yowes To The Knowes / No Provenance None of the remaining songs were seeded, having not been nominated among any "favourites" lists that I came across.
