Well, I left that disc running, and it turned out that there were more songs on it! I propose to add these to the Fourth Round Draw, and seek the permission of the eight of you who have already voted to lave your choices unchanged, or ask you to resubmit them if any of these additions affect them:
AMOUR FOU [Vetiver] A live version of this Vetiver song (written by Devendra Banhart and Andy Cabic). This is not referred to on my blotter note, but one of the voices certainly sounds like Joanna's, and the video shows her playing harp. I found this description of the song [not this live performance, though] on a Pitchfork album review of Vetrievr's self-titled 2004 album:
RIVER GUARD [Smog] You can listen to this one here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4nujzVRjg4. It's a live version of a song by Smog, which we are informed includes Joanna Newsom on keyboard. It was recorded in Chacago on 9-10-06, which I presume is 10 September 2006.
THE WHEEL This one was not on my disc, but on the strength of Claire's comment above, I am going to add this in for completeness, too. I don't have the Bill Callaghan album "Woke On A Whaleheart", so I am unsure if it is the album version that Claire refers to as "possibly being able to hear her chatting/laughing at the end", or if it was a live version out there somewhere.
I have added these songs to groups 4, 2, and 1 respectively, and have amended the original post accordingly. Sorry this has become such a mess: I'll do a better job of it next time!
Hi Ursulabear Yes, Ring The Living Bell was in the First Round, and actually got a couple of votes but was knocked out by On A Good Day (Group 12). What I did fail to mention at the time, however, is that it was a collaboration between Smog, Weird War, and Joanna Newsom.
Group 1: - Have One On Me Group 2: - Sawdust & Diamonds Group 3: - In California Group 4: - Emily
Let me just say that I am *shocked* some of you people are willing to vote for Cosmia over Emily. That is just sick guys. Emily is the meteorite song! Only Skin is fantastic, but it's Emily that opens up the album with a line about a bird race that is so analogous to what the album experience you're about to have is. I mean, it is okay if you guys prefer Cosmia; I'm not angry, just disappointed. Group 3 looks like it is getting off to a good start. Baby Birch, M&B, and In California are all pretty strong--I'm excited to see what goes on here. I'm gonna cast mine for 'In California' because hey I love that song, but all three of them are fantastic. As opposed to Emily and Cosmia. Between which there is a clear winner. ... Just sayin.
Emily vs. Cosmia was also very difficult. I love them both. In Cosmia she sounds almost like she's on the brink of tears at some points. And the Ys Street Band EP version is just... But Emily wins on lyrics, for me. And the end of the song. And the beginning and the middle. And it got me my A in Higher English. I mean, "Joy, landlocked in bodies that don't keep; dumbstruck with the sweetness of being till we don't be. Told: Take this, eat this." How can you compete with that?
Austin Sound: It’s also been a lot of fun watching you and Joanna tighten up your live performances together over the last 6 months. What do you feel that she has contributed in shaping the new music, and was there a particular reason she doesn’t perform on the album?
Bill Callahan: The recording session started pretty much on the day she set off on tour with her band. Physically impossible for her to play on the record. She has helped me realize the potential for dynamics in music.
It's too late to be grateful It's too late to be late again It's too late to be hateful
Steve, i just wonder if it's really worth chucking in all these old / obscure tracks that obviously no one is going to vote for? I mean I know you want to be comprehensive but it's so obvious they will get 0 votes why not just keep these tracks out? Although I suppose it doesn't really make a difference if they just sit there getting no votes. Or maybe it upsets the balance of some of the groups? Or maybe it doesn't.
Also I really disagree about Emily vs Cosmia. Sure Emily is mind-bogglingly amazing and beautiful but there is a truth and purity to Cosmia which is completely unmatchable.
