So to ursulabear, under a CPell, doublewuzzy, Jessie [apologies - I've been spelling your name wrong, haven't I], beverley, claire, and milkteeth - all I presume in the USA or Canada judging by their timings. Or is Ursula in Sweden, I wonder ...

Deciding between The Book of Right-On and Cosmia was difficult, but all of Group 15 is torturous. Decided just not to vote on that one.

Much harder. Had to actually listen to a couple groups to finally make a decision.
Fifteen votes now received, so thank you to the latest contributors: weirdelves, ell ess two, Gerritsón, madpawn, LawnsOfDawns (our own version of Charles Alcock!), Wanbli, and elseanio.
And ursulabear, I can see why your heart lies in the Nordic lands - I've had nothing but good times in my frequent visits to those parts of the world ...
As expected, many more of the groups this time around are more evenly matched contests, and so every vote is important. I wrestled with my conscience before deciding that it wouldn't be unconstititional of me to follow up on a couple of postings, so ... I agree wholeheartedly with Claire, but will have to agree to differ with doublewuzzy. Still, opinions are what this is all about and it'd be pointless if we all agreed. [Refrains from typing anything about the chap with his uncomplementary MEM review, to which he is of course entitled...].
For me, it's already looking like a couple of my personal favourites could be relying on the 'second chance' rule to stay in the competition, and another is involved in a very close contest. But for me to say more probably would be unfair, so my lips are sealed.
It's addictive to keep coming back to see what everyone has chosen!
I chose Does Not Suffice because its effect was so immediate when I first heard it. I broke down crying on first listen, while it took a few listens of Go Long for me to really get into it.
I agree with Jordan, in that Does Not Suffice made an immediate impression, whereas Go Long took a few listens before I fully appreciated it. It will be one of the harder choices for me, too, though perhaps not as hard as that in Group 15 between Easy and Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie.
I also have major soft-spots for both The Fray, What We Have Known, and Ca' The Yowes To The Knowes, but all of these are up against other goodies too... What choices we have to make. Out of the 48 songs still in the Tournament, I'd be quite happy to see any one of about 32 of them win it, which speaks volumes for the overall quality in JN's work.
The first time I saw This Side of the Blue live, it became one my fave songs of hers- still is. and I prefer the Yarn & Glue version of the song.
For instance 'wuzzy mentions the chord progression making his choice easy- and I do agree that musically I would lean towards You and Me, Bess. It feels polished and mature.
But, when I close my eyes and hear the 2 songs, one evokes a more emotional, visceral response within and stimulates all the senses that I enjoy with an artist. This Side of the Blue makes me feels like I am walking underwater, in mist, slogging through a cloud- the space in-between the notes and tension created in the songs spacing is deeply meditative for me. I have a physical response to the song.
This Side of The Blue was the first Joanna song I heard, and as such will always be at the top of my list. It also evokes a lot of the emotions Wanbli described. That feeling of getting lost in the song, not even thinking about chord progressions or composition.
I've seen her 4 times and she aint played it yet It's a great excuse to see her concerts as many times as I can though.
