Hi, my name is Rosa and I'm an 18-year-old student from the West Midlands of England (studying English, Music and German at sixth form). I was on the Versions of Joanna album (I did the cover of 'In California') and I have done quite a lot of Joanna Newsom covers on youtube, which you might have seen (you can find them at youtube.com/rosafrancescamusic). I'd been sort of deliberating over whether or not to join this forum for a while, but thought that I ought to, in order to kind of complete my obsession haha. Also, my favourite album is Ys and my favourite song is Only Skin.

Hi,

I'm a grad student living in Montreal. I first heard Joanna when my brother highly recommended that I listen to Ys. Well, I didn't actually heed his suggestion right away, cuz I don't always appreciate the same music as him. :cool:

But Joanna was playing a concert in my city only five days after I moved here and he beseeched me to go see her if only for his sake. I just shrugged it off and didn't go. :sure:

I definitely came to regret that decision a few months later when I finally got around to listening to Ys and realized it was the best music I'd heard in forever! I pined for her to come back and play but it didn't materialize until last spring when she toured HOOM. But my appreciation of her music has remained constant since I first heard it and I'm sure I enjoyed this concert more than I would have way back in 2006 when I wasn't familiar with it. So it's all good. :rock:

Hi there Newsomaniacs. Clare here. At some time in the recent past, I suddenly felt myself falling asleep at a friend's house party in Glasgow after accepting a drink from a bearded stranger. I have no idea how long I slept for, but, approximately two and a half hours ago, I mysteriously awoke at Milton Keynes aboard a Virgin train from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street, clutching a brown paper bag full of "Joanna Newsom" lyrics booklets. I was so captivated by the texts during the two hour journey that I decided to find the nearest internet cafe in Liverpool city centre and register on this forum.

Hello my name is Anthony, and I'm a student from the North West of England. I'd been hearing a lot about Joanna for a couple of years through various conversations on the Bjork forum, and positive reviews on music websites, such as Pitchfork etc. I'm always kind of sceptical about newish artists, however, and I've become rather accustomed to being disappointed by them, so I didn't give her a listen for a long time. Around last year, however, I noticed that her album Ys had topped many critics " best of the decade" lists, so I decided to take a risk and downloaded the album. The first thing that immediately caught my attention when I pressed play on 'Emily' was Newsom's striking vocals; I found them exhilarating , and utterly unique, so from the first 5 seconds I was sort of hooked! :lol:

Then after I'd got over that initial thrill, I noticed what a profoundly original work this album was, and though I feel it took me a while to really get to the heart of the album, once I got there, I felt I really couldn't go a day without listening to it. I think it was tracks 3 and 4 that finally converted me to Newsom fandom, particularly the middle section of 'Sawdust And Diamonds'. To be honest, I think I'm probably just as moved by her first album, particularly 'Sadie', which never fails to make me teary. :lol:

After multiple listens, I have to be honest, I find Have One On Me kind of difficult to engage with in comparison (though I really appreciate the ambition in it), but I still can't wait to hear what she does next. I haven't been this excited by an artist since I started listening to Bjork.

You should listen to some live shows of HOOM. Better than the album, imo. But this is the place to go if you want bootlegs! They're around here somewhere.

Thanks will do. I've been listening to some of them already actually. I absolutely adore the live rendition of On A Good Day (my favourite song on the album) that she did on Letterman. I really wish she'd release a live CD/DVD actually, she's really exciting to watch.
