Thanks for those, Wanbli. I clicked on them, not expecting to watch them for long, but tere was somethingf remarkable about those performances of two of Joanna's very best songs - brave guy to take them on.

I'm no expert, but I was fascinated by the way he used the entire length of his guitar, especially in Sawdust. I'm guessing it takes a fraction of a second longer to "find your place" for the fingers when extending over such a long range, but he covered that cleverly with a slightly stuttered performance throughout, and did a reasonable job with the part where Joanna's harp just seems to chime magically up around 7 mins.

I didn't think En Gallop was quite as successful (but then I am wedded to the two wonderful original versions of this). Again he coaxes some odd sounds fro his instrument, but somehow there didn't seem quite such a distinction between the middle part and the main melody that disappears for a while and then comes back so earthshatteringly when Joanna does it. I also felt it owed a bit to the somewhat comedic banjo version () which does have a strange fascination.

I am not sure I'll be watching either of these again, but I do admire what appears to be an innovative adaptation.

I'm usually impressed by musicians "with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men!" I doubt that my fingers and thumb can be stretched far enough to reach some of the notes he played...but I will try. Thanks for the links, Wanbli.

So apparently Joanna worke with Thao Nguyen on her new album. So there's that.

I hadn't heard of Thao Nguyen until a few days ago, when I rewatched this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNWto4xiCcw) rather lovely video (a favourite of mine) by an obscure performer, and happened to read the comments underneath, where someone said "looks like Thao in the background". And then I just happened to wonder who this Thao was, and so looked her up on the intermaweb. It's a small world full of light ... But I wouldn't want to have to paint it [LA].
