@everyone - The whole instrumental-jam-to-fade-out ending is actually present on several tracks on HOOM - Good Intentions Paving Company, Go Long, Does Not Suffice - and I generally think this is an intended thing rather than just a cop out. There is definitely a sense of space and introspection about the record (the way Joanna uses space is a subject unto itself), and it's certainly enhanced by these long instrumental stretches that always pop up after some momentous emotional climax. Maintaining ambiguity seems to be another big reason, by having an ending that is not seen, or a song that is implied to continue. If Joanna thought it was taseteful or artistically important to end every song on a definite cadence, she definitely would, and it definitely wouldn't be particularly difficult for her (try D-G-D). If I'm not mistaken, none of the tracks on her other records have indefinite endings.

Also lol I love all the outtros on the record. Trombone solo! My favorite album of hers by far.

On MEM there are also some fade-outs (Bridges and Balloons and Peach, Plum, Pear).

Personally I've never liked fade-outs that much, but I think it works in the case of Good Intentions Paving Co., and I think maybe the reason they're used particularly on HOOM is to showcase the different instruments and to emphasize Ryan Francesconi's arrangements.

However I still prefer the old ending of Baby Birch that she did in the original piano version (especially because in HOOM it doesn't have the higher sung repeats of 'be at peace baby, and be gone').
