Who else remembers reading an interview with Joanna where she mentioned having had short hair like this? Or maybe it was somebody who came on the forum claiming to have known her in high school? I think those posts got lost with the old site.

My first thought was that she's so darn pretty she tried a little modeling when she was younger and this was one of her headshots. The cut/style screams 90's to me.

Yeah, definitely '90s.

I know people on Facebook were saying this couldn't be her in high school because she has long hair in that other high school picture, but that's bogus. I was wearing my hair that short less than two years ago and it's already grown past my shoulders.

It's photoshopped, I call BS on the high school thing. :O Has to do with shape of her face and maturing. The border and paper effect of the pic are post-process effects to hide any minor pixelation. to blend the cutout outline of ones facial features is easier than you think. Look carefully where her eyeline meets her ears if you visualize a circle around her head. then look at many other photos of her - different. Unless it is her very recently, I am betting it is a fake. My 20+ years of photoshop experience smells a fake. We shall see...

Looks shopped to me too. The only short hair pic I've ever seen is this ridiculously tiny one which I seem to recall was taken at her graduation, though I may have imagined that.

EDIT: In fact, I think the graduation shot was a different one that I lost in a hardrive crash. And this one is just from her time in The Pleased and she's wearing a wig. I've been no help at all, is what I'm saying.

If you look at this picture, which is her when she was quite young, they don't look alike. She carried a lot more weight around her face and her ears are totally different. I don't think this is her and I agree with the points Wanbli made about Photoshop and maturity of the face.

Also, I know these could have been photoshopped in, but for what it's worth, her moles and the birthmark on her arm are all accounted for.

And her hair color, and her dimensions in, ahem, other areas. It's not like I care if it is her, but I'm just astounded at the fact that there is a picture of her looking that way. And with that much hair gel. She looks gorgeous, though!

This would probably have to be pre-Highscool yearbook or pre-The Pleased, but she really does look too mature to be a teenager. I guess she has short hair in her early twenties?

Shoulder-length. That short-haired photo could even be a senior photo -- considering it's posed and whatnot, but obviously not for anything to do with her music. She still would've had time to have shoulder-length hair in 2002.

It may be photoshopped, and she may have never had short hair, but it fits fine into a timeline of hair length. She wasn't in the public eye until 2002 (right?), and her hair was shorter then than we've seen it since.

Are there any post-yearbook pre-2002 photos out there?

Well, I talked to Mr Wizard the Lizard earlier today and I booked some time on his Way-Back Machine for next Tuesday. I should be able to clear up this whole short-hair-photoshopped-picture issue once and for all when I get back. Hopefully I should be able to bring back some new pictures, too. Maybe I'll even encourage her to self-record some cd's while I'm there.

For what it's worth-----The color photo ( of the girl with short hair ) found on Tumblr IS Joanna . It's her senior class photo from the 2000 edition of the Nevada Union High School yearbook ( aka : " Prospector " ) . She is listed as " Joanna Caroline Newson " . The b/w photo a couple of posts above IS her freshman class photo . She is also incorrectly listed as " Joanna Newson " . Her sophomore & junior year yearbook photos correctly list her as " Joanna Newsom " . The 2000 NUHS Prospector also has sophomore class photos of Emily Newsom & Alele Menig ( aka : Alela Diane ) . Pete Newsom's junior & senior class photos are in the 1998 & 1999 editions . There don't appear to be any other photos of Joanna in any of the yearbooks other than her class photo for each year . I know all this because I have the four yearbooks from the time Joanna was at NUHS . I have thought of putting these photos on this site before , but hesitated because I wasn't sure if it was somehow invading her privacy . I can see now , however , that with her relentless fanbase , these photos would've come out eventually ! Hopefully , I don't come across as " stalkerish " , but I have always been fascinated by high school yearbooks and have collected them since I was in grade school --with a special affinity for ones from the 1920s and earlier................
