Hello, I'm a 16-year-old New Yorker who idolizes Pierre Boulez and Tibor/Maira Kalman and would like to think that she is an artist. After the release of WHY?'s album, Alopecia, I listened to it obsessively, analyzing the lyrics. I was led to Joanna's music from a cryptic whisper in the background of The Hollows ("...even just Joanna Newsom's left hand"). I figured if Yoni would mention her in a song she had to be good, and I was right.

Hey, I'm Rebekah. I'm fourteen, actually... sophomore in high school because I skipped eighth grade.

I write fantasy novels--not vampire-ridden ones, either. If I use non-human species, it's usually a creature I invented or... modified. My fairies, for instance, are paranoid and somewhat trigger-happy.

It was my older brother who ran into Joanna, and I've gotten her music from him. The first songs I'd heard were from The Milk-Eyed Mender: Bridges and Balloons and The Book of Right-On.

Speaking of The Book of Right-On, I do take karate, but I do not use it to kill my dinner.

Hi, I'm Adam, I just turned seventeen this June, and the first time I heard Joanna Newsom was when I happened to flick onto Jools Holland when she was performing 'Jackrabbits'. It was kind of a happy coincidence really, because I rarely channel-hop like that -- maybe it was fate! I fell in love with the song, and then with the rest of 'Have One on Me', and after that with the Nardwuar interview of her.

Another funny coincidence is that nowadays around the house I often hear my younger sister singing to herself the tunes of some of the songs from that album, so maybe I have passed Joanna's songs on to her much in the same way that you, Rebekah, discovered Joanna through your older brother.

As for the rest of my life, I'm currently in Sixth Form studying maths, sciences, French, and Spanish. I also enjoy the music of Leonard Cohen, and I play the piano and (a little) the ukulele, and sing.
I hope that finally taking the time to make myself an account will see me contributing a fair amount on here; one of the things that put me off was the seeming lack of activity on these forums, but I realised that there was more chatter going on than first met the eye.

Hello Riv, polliwog and Gerritsón! I'm guessing that it should be said gerritSON due to the accent on the 'o', or is that just artistic license?

Can someone tell me what the titles ("narwhal", "owlet", etc.) mean underneath people's usernames? I assume it's tied to post counts in some way, and it must be related to JN's songs.
