The ear of corn is also a reference to the Eleusinian Mysteries, the rites of an ancient cult dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. Since the rites were secret, what they entailed has been lost to time. All anyone knows is that at the pivotal moment of the ritual, a single ear of corn was held aloft and adored in complete silence.
