i heard part of her stuff and i'm just  did i miss something?

I never heard of her. So, I watched a few clips on youtube. Her voice is ok. She's pretty. Nothing that suggests that she should be "hugh". Anyway, what do I know?

Her lips look painful.

I saw her perform on Later... a few weeks ago and I thought her voice sounded really bad. It's a somewhat okay song, even if she rhymes sundress with undressed (that may be a nitpick, but the lyrics are pretty unbearable beyond that...). Even the studio version isn't amazing though, I really don't get the fuss.

I don't understand why she's such an indie darling either since she's clearly a corporate tool. Is it because she sings about video games on the internet? Because neither of those things have been cool since Xbox Live and lolcats.

Well she sucks. She can't sing.

MY theory is people love trainwrecks, as to why she is popular.

She is a product of $$$. Her daddy is a mega-millionaire who threw marketing dollars and lawyers at her.

"her management chose her stage name, "I wanted to be a band but the label I was with and the team I had around me absolutely wanted me to be a solo artist. Lana Del Rey came from a series of managers and lawyers over the last 5 years who wanted a name that they thought better fit the sound of the music."

Juliette Lewis said it best:

"like watching a 12-year-old in their bedroom when they're pretending to sing and perform."

She's pretty awful.
First off, it's disturbing that she's so young and already has plastic-surgery-paralyzed face.
Her music presents itself as pretty but below that superficial layer is really dull,
she can't sing well, and I saw someone say "Oh maybe I should give her a chance maybe she just has a strange voice like Joanna Newsom," but no, it's not that, she's out of tune and kind of gravely.

It's even worse than Lady Gaga because of the marketing, rather than to a "mainstream" is like straight from Urban Outfitters catalogue style, trying to be eclectic, obviously selling to that group of self-righteous suburban kids who think they are poets. That sounds harsh, but that whole demographic in general just ticks me off.

She might well have been in a trainwreck, it could explain those bloated, fleshy mouth protrusions.

Hipster Runoff does a frequent Lana Del Report which is quite amusing. I searched for Joanna Newsom on the site and it came up with:

JOANNA NEWSOM
Alternative Celebrity
Joanna Newsom is some indie songstress who plays the harp and writes weirdo songs that some ppl say are 'amazing.'

and

Does Joanna Newsom have the looks AND the talent to compete with LDR?
Will critics overrate harp playing females in the post-LDR era?
How will LDR change the way we rate female indie artists?

They relate everything back to Lana Del Rey. It's as if they've gone mad.

Apparently she's marketed as the "gangster Nancy Sinatra"?
Sorry, but wasn't Nancy Sinatra already the gangster Nancy Sinatra?

I find the revamping totally creepy

Also, the comparisons to Tori Amos make me want to puke.

I just watched the Lizzy Grant vid. Just horrible. Then I watched Video Games. I actually love it! Does that make her the next great thing on the American music scene? I don't think so, but then, who am I am?

Both before and after her "makeover" made me cringe. The first video is just embarrassing. And then.. why the fake lips? Painful looking.

Thought I might buy the CD until I heard this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAcNJAKhSVc, an excerpt from the song 'National Anthem'. I thought this would be an actual national anthem, which would be quite a cool thing to do, but it isn't. Lyrics are:

"I'm your national anthem
God you're so handsome
Take me to the Hamptons
Bugatti Veyron

...

Wind in my hair
Hand on the back of my neck
I said "Can we party later on?"
He said "Yes, yes, yes""

She'll go away soon.

Lana actually said that of herself. So irritating, right?

Okay, so, I was home sick for the past few days. Having nothing to do, I listened to the album. Admittedly, "Off to the Races" is very catchy and the whole thing wasn't outwardly bad when I didn't have to see her lips or think about who she actually is.
But it was just mediocre, I can't see any sort of new ideas or creativity within either her image or her music, and can't see how she's the "next big thing" beyond the fact that she's rich enough to buy herself that status.

What is the big deal about new ideas and creativity? I've heard and seen a lot of new ideas that were supposedly creative and they were about as far from being art as they could be.
