I heard he was the best act when he did SXSW in '07, and I missed him a couple of years ago, so I definitely want to catch him if I can this time.

I'm actually really snobby about seeing people in small venues; sometimes I go as far as missing an artist if the venue is too big. I feel like the setting needs to be intimate. I'm going to see him at this tiny club in Los Angeles called The Troubadour that's noted for booking really good acts.

Also, did you get to catch him play "River Guard"?

Never saw him play that one, but I have seen some gems from the back catalog like "Strayed" and "Natural Decline."

Was anyone else at the Chicago show last night? It was pretty great! We had dinner reservations at the venue which put us in the VIP area and Neil Morgan was hanging out before and after the show. Of course I was too chicken to chat with him... plenty of other people weren't, though!

I was there too! I felt like a total creep because I accidentally stood directly in front of Bill. I had assumed that he would stand in the middle so I stood off to the side. Whoops!

It was the fourth time I've seen him and by far the best. He actually seemed to be happy to be there and enjoying himself, and I really like the little three piece they have going (Neal especially, of course). There are a couple of songs that he plays every time I see him that I could do without (mostly "Our Anniversary") and I would have swapped out "Free's" for "Universal Applicant" from the new album, but overall I was happy with the set list. I almost shouted out "Let Me See The Colts, again!" when he was asking for requests.

No one has a comment on this? I'm the only one? Gosh seems like the same story to me.

I think we talked about that a little more in a different thread somewhere. Can't remember which though...

There's a tour documentary in the works with footage from the last US tour, and you can help finance it on Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/650 ... -tour-film

The rewards are pretty awesome. My personal favorite is "a picture of Bill holding a picture of you"

^^ damn if I had the cash... That'd be an amazing/hilarious keepsake. I wonder what's on his mix CD?

I'm a big smog fan by the way. Julius Caesar's my favourite album, but I like his Bill Callahan work too, especially A River... and Apocalypse.

Well, I forked over some money for the tour documentary and I got my photo:

I feel pretty proud that I got a skeptical smirk out of the guy.

Oh and also, I really enjoy that the picture was taken in front of the same fence as this one, featuring Joanna's shadow:

I've had Julius Caesar on repeat lately, I'm becoming a bit of a diehard fan.

I am listening to his last record dream river. I like it . I prefer this one to the previous. I never can't get into it.

I'm enjoying Dream River but overall I prefer Apocalpyse. I really love Spring and Small Plane. The Sing and Javelin Unlanding are very good too. I want to like Summer Painter more than I do, but to me it sounds like the lyrics were a first draft that never got polished (especially that horribly on-the-nose "guess I got my rainy day" line) which is weird because his lyrics are usually really great. The second half in general I'm not crazy about. Ride My Arrow is pretty good but I'm underwhelmed by Seagull and Winter Road. Just think about how epic the closing tracks of the last two albums were (Faith/Void and One Fine Morning) and Winter Road really seems like a dud in comparison.
