the thing with Björk is that she has always been in tune with or slightly ahead of her time,
so what made her albums so groundbreaking back then, could be less of a wow-experience if you
hear them first time now, since others have gone down the same road after her.
so it's hard to pick the perfect introduction.

but all in all, i think Greatest Hits too, and then Homogenic (if you like hard beats and strings)
or Vespertine (if you like soft and intimate strings)

i've loved her music since Debut. she went straight into my heart.
somehow that led me to do her official page :o
it's been on hiatus but have a new design waiting for implementation.
this year. yes, definitely

I'd say to start with Vespertine. A lot of people who I wouldn't have expected to like Bjork love Vespertine. Selmasongs is a good starter as well, but it would probably be best if you waited until you saw "Dancer in the Dark". She also has some really interesting videos:

All Is Full Of Love

Pagan Poetry

Hyperballad

Joanna opening for Bjork must be one of the best shows I've been to <3

Oh Lina, wonderful, I've always liked the different style of the websites (especially all that amazing pages you did for the greatesthits era), I look forward for a new webstyle!

And I am a huge Björk's fan too, from Post actually. And Post is my favourite album, there so time enough to discover all the hidden places in Post. And there are a lot of bsides and and remixes as well. All my collection is in Italy (a lot of cds, dvds, and many articles from all around the world) and I miss it so much <3 , it's all compressed on my ipod, but each time I come back to Italy there's always a moment to spend with my Björk collection, as a ritual. I would suggest Debut-Post- Homogenic and Vespertine. Just after it's easier to appreciate Medulla or Drawing Restraint. Volta I dind't enjoy that much, but there are a couple of songs really beautiful there too. Some pics of my collection ;-)

Kinda funny that this thread should pop up today. Heard Bachelorette blasting from the dance studio next door to our department and have been thinking about her since! I'm a big fan of Vespertine too. Definitely the starting point I'd recommend - well, either that or Homogenic.

For me, Björk is the most interesting musician who appeared in the 90's and she's definitely one of my favourite artists of all times allthough I tend not to listen much to her at the moment.
I just love her studio work but not really in a live situation, I think she's kind of boring on stage. But most of her videos are just great!

I just loved her first Sugarcubes album and all the other ones except Selma Songs (but I think they really worked in "Dancer in the Dark")and "Volta" (which I thought was very boring!). My favourite album is the exquisite "Vespertine", but "Medulla" is a great album too (allthough far from immediate).

The only problem is I don't really like her as a person. I think she's awfully contemptuous and pretentious (allthough a friend of mine who used to know her personally told me she was such a nice one in a private situation) and I never liked her "trendy" ways.

One of the most impressive pop artists of all times though. "Icon" is the word.

That's interesting point. I would never try to approach her if for some reason there could be a chance because it seems that she doesn't like being in touch with fans and her behaviour coudl be unpredictable. I mean, also PJ Harvey doesn't like to get in touch with fans, but she has such good and smart way to manage this side of her work. Björk is more direct. Then I have the impression that in the beginning she was more opened, but now she lives just as in a crew. Sometimes it's easy to forget that she is a person like everyone, but she should learn to be more relaxed with fans. Read here for example:
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2 ... _long.html
a guy said: "Did anyone else catch Bjork being a total cunt to that fat girl standing to the side of the turntables? The girl just wanted to say "hey" and she got blasted! Awesome. That Battles guy had the best set, hands down!"
I would die

i'd die too if she treated me that way, she's surprisingly rude sometimes.

i remember a picture of her showing her middle finger to the camera while she was riding a bicycle. sooo unnecessary.

except when you're surrounded by fans 24h/24...but i totally agree she's an asshole with her fans, she forget a little bit that whithout fans she'll be nothing...
i love her work for quite 15 years and i have a lot of patience with her mistakes but her work and her behaviour bored me for years even if i buy it  ...medulla is awfull, volta is unnecessary, she's too commercial: voltaic, surrounded box, price of her gig etc...i'm upset to being fu*** by he artist i respected the most...i crave for the new album, it'll be the turning point of my long bjork fan carriere, package my big bjork altar or add another holy object to the collection :smirk:
actually i only listen to the old stuff, debut, post, homogenic, b-sides, collab, suga, kukl i adore, sometimes vespertine which is quite good but sounds like a bjork parodia, elves music, music box, lala, bell...that's not the bjork i love, i like the live one who's screaming on army of me, pluto, or sexiest on venus as a boy, pleasure is all mine etc...i hate when she's compared to a fucking fairy, she's a a woman, wife, mother, not a 4 years old girl, that's the main reason i'm not active on bjork forum, i'm definitely not into the "bjork vespertine image"

Yeah, I can understand what you mean. There was a moment that I thought: what's going on?!!! Too much realeses. I was disappointed. It seems Björk said that for years she heard people complaining about the lack of her publication so she decided to put hand on it and make her fans happier, but actually made her fans just poor und unsatisfied. You can say: "well it's your decision to spend money or not" - right, but we are talking about Björk's fans, and everybody knows how feticistic and crazy we are for buyng that 12" of Isobel, or Army of me single's with pop up inside. I mean the all Björk's career was founded on collection stuff, b-side, rare version, limited edition, so was quite predictable that if her publishes something her 80% of fans would buy it. I didn't bought "Sorrounded", unnecessary, and the reissues of vynils. The only thing we asked for was a collection of b-sides, some new live dvds better than Royal Opera House, and some old live album different from the ones she selected. Anyway, she's great and I will listen to her music forever, maybe not like on the beginning with Debut-Post-Homogenic. I don't write on her forum as well, I feel I little bit older there, with Dancer in the Dark, Vespertine and Volta she catched so many fans of the new generation (good for her) that I feel I can't share my feelings there.

I actually don't have any friends who will listen to bjork with me. They say she's "annoying". I think it's just sexism.

I'm getting a bit concerned though. I'll be honest and say that although Volta was a fairly decent album, it certainly wasn't anything to write home about. If it was her only album, I probably wouldn't even listen to Bjork. I hope her next one is much better...

P.S. - Vespertine is my favorite as well. It's probably the same tastes that make us like JN.

Enough of this terror, we deserve to know light.
