So lots of singer/songwriter fans out here, but I tend to be more of a band person bar Joanna.

So who are your favourite bands?

Mine probably:

Spiritualized
The Flaming Lips
Radiohead
The National
Beach House
Grizzly Bear
Neutral Milk Hotel
Animal Collective
The Antlers
Beatles
Liars
My Bloody Valentine
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
The Smiths
TV on the Radio
Velvet Underground
The xx
Pixies, Joy Division, The Cure

It’s difficult for me to pick out favourite bands now, because I am discovering a lot of new and interesting music of all kinds – I only discovered Joanna Newsom in 2008, so she is still new to me – but for many years I seemed to listen mostly to The Legendary Pink Dots … and of course Cocteau Twins still occupy a big place in my heart. In terms of bands I’m probably still largely stuck in the 1980s! Moving back to the 2000s, do Godspeed You Black Emperor! and A Silver Mt Zion count as bands?

Saw Spiritualized a year or so ago, and they were awesome, but I don't think I'd put 'em in my favourites. Anyhow, some of mine...

Television
Black Sabbath
Broadcast
Talking Heads
The Flaming Lips
R.E.M.
The Velvet Underground
The Upsetters
Supersilent
Einsturzende Neubauten
Funkadelic
Mahavishnu Orchestra

I guess I rely more on songwriters than bands, but some definitely mean a lot to me:

Cocteau Twins
Siouxsie & The Banshees
Dead Can Dance (If they could be considered as a "band")
The Sundays
Shelleyan Orphan

Those 5 are above all for me. Then

The Beatles (of course)
Bruce Springsteen with the E-Street Band
ABBA crafted some wonderful tunes
Talking Heads

And if Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares can be called "a band", then they can be added to the top 5 on the list...

Of course, Beirut, Arcade Fire, Portishead and some others got me interested during some time, but not enough to get listed here...

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND and THE BEATLES

There are other bands I really really love but honestly VU and beatles are (for me) a mile above the rest.

Anyway, if I made a list, it would look suspiciously like the one weird elves posted.

Genres I love include psychedelic, freak folk, and garage

Enough of this terror, we deserve to know light.

Fairly typical rock bands, that type of thing.
