A little (harmless) mischief, anyone?

Each year, a national UK radio station dedicated to playing "classical" music, runs a public vote for its "Hall of Fame". I believe voting takes place in January and February, and they then broadcast the top 300 over Easter.

In their context, "classical music" takes quite a wide definition. They play what most people would regard as "classical" - ie symphonic works by Beethoven and the like, and operatic arias, even gregorian chants, etc, but they also add modern film scores, and modern so-called "popular classics" by individual vocalists (in the Catherine Jenkins mould) and musicians (Claire Jones, André Rieu) etc: quite a mixed bag of the good, the bad and the ugly!

I wonder if it might be fun to see if, by the power of MM's collecting voting power, we are able to sneak a JN track into their top 300! I'd suggest that when the voting begins (and I'll advise, with a link) we each vote for 2 choices of anything we fancy, and all include a vote (preferably a #1 choice) for a JN song agreed beforehand.

As for what that song should be ... I think to reduce the chances of disqualification, a simple hard-and-voice song would be more likely to slip through. Most of MEM would thus qualify, but with uninitiated listeners often taking exception to her early voice (not me, I hasten to add), maybe one of the HOOM songs would work best. Off the top of my head, here are three suggestions:
Esme
On a Good Day
Ribbon Bows
(Probably the BEST choices of all would be Three Little Babes - which is of the required antiquity, but does not seem especially popular among MM-ers ['cept me], and Ca The Yowes To The Knowes which scores highly on every criterion except that it's never been officially released).

A folk pedant writes: Three Little Babes and Ca The Yowes are traditional not classical. Just being old doesn't make something classical, no matter how broad the station's brief. And neither does having a harp on it. Not that I want to spoil the fun.*

*I always want to spoil the fun.

I'd love to see something from Ys make the list. :D

With pleasure! :)
On a Good Day is my favorite Joanna's song and voting for it would be great.

i think it would make more sense to use a track from Ys since the orchestral arrangements are exactly what people construe as 'classical' when they're voting film scores, which we already know have been included in the past.

I've spoken before about how Joanna's music definitely isn't classical according to any sensible definition of the word, but I'm guessing this is Classic FM you're talking about, so we could probably get a gangster rap track with a violin sampled in it onto their list. Something from Ys would probably make most sense.

This is an awesome idea. Emily maybe. Or only skin.

Hi Jordan ... You are quite right (I only didn't mention the name directly in case they suspect cohesive voting and do a Google to see where it came from :) )

I would also not disagree with OneOfThose and Jordan~ in their assessments that JN doesn't truly belong in this chart (their loss!) but that's sort of the point.

Choices are widening aren't they... I listened to Ys twice over the weekend to help quell my norovirus, and with this in mind. One of the things that perhaps differentiates "classical" from "popular" and other genres is that the vocals are usually either "trained" or fit into quite a narrow band of types ... and maybe JN's doesn't ... but it was probably furthest away on MEM, then a little less far away on Ys, and a little nearer again on HOOM. That, and some of the more contemporary sounding accompaniment originally led me to discount Ys songs when I made my first post. With my newly opened ear, though, I think Emily would also be an excellent choice. On the other hand, Only Skin would at least solve the issue of "Wheich one?" in a sensible way, as it has come out on top in both JNSTs. And Weirdelves has a point, too ... I really should have included Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie in my first list.

If we do it, though, I think it's important that we select one and stick to it, for maximum impact.

Have One On Me (the song) is good, too!
