Does anyone else not like the way this went down? Fans were willing to buy the album, donating money to the charity and then the record company puts it online as a free download. Just rubbed me the wrong way.

I would love if she did a full instrumental album! :luv:

Jessie,

My theory is that is was simply a close family friend that asked permission to put together and sell this CD as a fundraiser locally only. No distribution, no digital copies. Since there is no publishing, copyright, bar code or other usual markings on the CD - it was never meant to leave the physical confines of the hospital gift shop.

Of course in this instant-delivery, digital world to assume it would remain so is short-sighted.

I do agree with Jessie that I felt uneasy about downloading a piece that was meant for charity, and am glad that Wanbli provided a link to the donation site. I wonder if the Sierra Nevada Cancer Center realise that they have a very marketable commodity on their hands, and thet they could probably raise a few quid by selling this. (Unfortunately your original link isn't working for the high quality WAV file :( but I did manage to find a lesser quality one, an MP3 @ ~250, which is quite listenable).

Thank you also for the link to the Tom Bombadil ringtone, Wanbli. Was this 32 second clip the whole piece, or is that a part of a longer song? And did she perform any other songs on Portlandia? And is there any way that you could provide a link to the actual sound file so that I (and others in backwaters like the UK who can't see the Portlandia stuff) can keep a copy. I can run an audio cable out of my PC and into the AUX of my steroe, and make an analogue recording that way, but it's (a) fiddly and (b) lossy, and it would be sooo much nicer just to download a file (pleeease :) ) At first I didn't read the site properly, saw the big green DOWNLOAD button and clicked it, thinking this would be it. However, it's a downloader for a toolbar, which brings me out in a cold sweat (have had some bad experiences with those) ... but in the hope that it would bring Tom Bombadil along with it, I went along with it ... but when it had finished downloading and installing ... no toolbar and no sound file.

Steve

well, it appears because you are in the UK you cannot access the mediafire .wav link, which works fine still and requires no toolbar.
this work?

Tindeck never used to require a toolbar (last few times I used and Dled)- I agree, I don't do 3rd party downloaders unless a trusted source like amazon, etc.

Can you see this video?
Joanna Newsom in Portlandia: Small Hatchback
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDnHD_xz8Us

I ripped audio from that using a browser plug-in. The original source for the video was a stream - so only lossy MP3 exists. That was all of the music/songs from the appearance. Rest is dialog and the sketch

Hi again Wanbli - many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Unfortunately the two "filedropper" links you provided seem to link to a welcome page inviting me to sign up for the service and to "drop" my own files, but not to retrieve files saved by others. And the YouTube is blocked, I guess because I'm in England.

I'd be more than happy to send you the expenses for a good old fashioned CD of the MP3, if that's something you could consider doing!

Also I was intrigued by your line about a browser plug-in fopr ripping audio from a video (although as mentioned it wouldn't help in this case - but for future reference). That certainly sounds much easier than wiring up my PC to an audio-HD and transferring to an audio-CD and then to an MP3... Are you able to give any advice about the software you use, please?

Thanks once again.

(Sorry - should this have been a PM? Hopefully I'm not the only Brit puzzled by all this!)

I hardly think they're missing out on much of a windfall. I'm a fairly rabid fan, and I don't want to buy a CD on which she features once in a piece that's not all that great.

Was that the whole portlandia segment? That wasn't funny :P

The great Firewall of Britain - crazy how much is blocked by your country

I would suggest using a proxy to surf so you can access the rest of the internet

try these
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/iuAXkR0X4b/T ... Portlandia).mp3.html
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/3NOZLTXNMP/I ... m.wav.html

try to access the portlandia youtube video through this page
http://proxy.org/cgi_proxies.shtml

As far as Browser plugins-
I use Chrome and these 2 extensions
Chrome YouTube Downloader - 2.6.4 Download videos from youtube in FLV,MP4, HD 720p, Full-HD 1080p, MP4 (4K) and MP3
http://www.chromeextensions.org/utiliti ... ownloader/

and convert to MP3 in any browser

^ Thanks so much for that. I would love to buy a copy of the CD and plan on getting my hands on one.

I think I've said this here before but, there was a harpist playing live outside of my room when I was in labor with my first son and it was so relaxing and soothing. I have her CD now as well.

Well, alas, there's never going to be anything that pleases everyone. But actually the CD 'Harpfelt Connections' is a fine disc of music. I bought a copy and I'm glad I did. The genuine heart of it makes it worth much more than so much of the slick and glib commercial tripe that passes for popular music these days. The entire CD of Harpfelt Connections is very pleasant to listen to, and the story behind it should be quite interesting to any fans. The musicians on the album consist of former patients and volunteers at the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. Joanna's former harp teacher is actually a music therapist who started a group at the hospital where cancer patients learn to play the harp as part of their healing regimen. I think this offers an insight into what makes Joanna and her music so lovable--- right from the get-go music and healing were inextricably entwined in her experience, and she was also nurtured in a loving and supportive creative community. And her original composition that appears on this CD is great, not least because she created it at such a young age. Of course anyone who practices a skill will hopefully improve that skill in some respects over time-- so this early recording may not be as advanced as her more mature work in some respects; however, it is a plain fact that it expresses the serious attention to detail and nuance and deep originality that characterizes all of her work.

"Out of the ever-renewed chording of innumerable wholes, within wholes, within wholes...the cyclic melody of Wholeness rises. Is it a melody? Or is it one immense Tone sent forth by the gong of Space for countless wholes to resonate to--- if they can, if they dare? Oh, blessed are those whose hearts respond to it, and in whose minds its overtones become Meaning, and Meaning, peace!"

Ah- I got the impression it was no longer on sale.

Thank you for the info, NobodyFromNowhere! I just called and spoke with a very pleasant lady called Elin, who assured me that the CD is still available for order. I'd assumed it was issued years ago, but was wrong - apart from the JN track, it's mostly contemporary, and only came out in the Autumn.

If anyone else wishes to order (and I think, if you've downloaded it, you should, bearing in mind that the CD was issued to support a very worthy cause), the best way to do so is to email Elin on

epersa@snmhf.com

and advise her of your interest. Once she has your email, she'll contact you and you can pay by credit card (Mastercard / Visa) - but please don't send your card details in the initial email. Each CD is priced at US$15 + p&p, which will of course depend on where it's to be sent.

Thank you both very much! I think this is an even cooler collector item then the early copies of albums floating around.
