RIGHT-ON / Best representation

the talking of the tadpoles

Postby ursulabear on 20 Oct 2011, 16:59

So. I am making a mixer for my friend, and am trying to choose one shortish song to represent Joanna at her best.
I am between En Gallop, Jackrabbits, and Book of Right-On.

Thoughts? What would you choose if you have to choose one shortish Joanna song for a mix cd?

Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.

I think it really all depends on your friend's personality/personal preferences,
but from experience I'd say
- '81
- Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
- This Side of the Blue
- On A Good Day

And he used to make me pray, wearing a mask like a death's head. When he put me there in the back seat, and he said, "Jesus save me, Jesus save me."

Of the three you listed, I think 'En Gallop' and 'Book of Right-On' are fantastic choices. They are both accessible, yet engaging, original, and great examples of the kind of thing Joanna Newsom can do. IMO a song like '81 or 'jackrabbits' is a little too normal to draw someone into joanna-land appropriately.

Enough of this terror, we deserve to know light.

Right-On was my first Joanna exposure (and also the first song she played when I saw her), so I always have loved it. I wanted a song that really showcases the harp, so I am thinking En Gallop. But 81 is so sweet and smooth and lovely, too.
