I'd like to talk about the sleep imagery in Only Skin. There are many moments in the lyrics that are invested in the slumber, the incantation of darkness, the passing of night, dreams, and death. The song even starts right in the middle of a dream! If anyone would like to accompany me in this discussion, I'd be delighted -- I'd love to start, though, with the images of sleep and darkness that Joanna provides in this song.
I'd really love to write about the construction and deconstruction of the dream at the beginning of the song. I have an awful lot to say about it.
I'm thinking of applying to write my dissertation on the discussion of motherhood and femininity in her lyrics. I think I've found a good tutor to help me.

I would like to write a bit about the symbolism in the animals she writes about. I think everything she does is a metaphor, especially with the animals.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
