heard this before, it's very "MEH"- can't stand the 3rd added woman's voice talking on top of it- would be nice if some of MEM was preserved as it was and mashed up instead of being cut up and used as beats, etc.
Well I mean what's to dislike aside from personal sweeping dislikes of an entire genre? Obviously all opinions are subjective so that's kind of a hypocritical statement but you know what I mean. I think it's pretty well crafted. Not saying I don't have sweeping dislikes either, I can't stand metal or emo music. Just waiting to find something good to change my mind (like The Dismemberment Plan showed me there can be good emo, just doesn't change the fact the rest is terrible)
ah, you need a mixer from me, tom. That'd change your thoughts on metal stat. I really like killfull musicianship. I like jay-Z because he has mastered a genre. I like Emilie Autumn because her violin and harpsichord skills are really remarkable, even though her lyrics tend to be mediocre. I like Finntroll because of their fantastic guitar skills and their ability to incorporate fiddles and banjos into hardcore metal.
Of course, I have one aim, the grotesque. If I am not grotesque I am nothing.
Tom, you have a personal sweeping dislike of a genre? Oh, you must be talking about me. I wouldn't call it "sweeping", but I do tend to dislike a lot of music from certain genres. However, there are songs from those same genres that I do like. What is up with that? Probably it's something in my programming. So, maybe I'd like this Jay Z Mix if I could hear more of Joanna and less of Jay Z...less of the "bitches, pimps, hos, niggas, etc."
Well you said as much yourself that you don't like things that are 'Gangster', so I took from that Gangster rap or even rap in general (but I wouldn't necessarily go that far). Of course I have no personal issue with you disliking or liking any genre, but I would say the skill and intelligence of wordplay and meaning in rap can be pretty staggering, and the sociological background to how it all became about braggadocio and 'pimps and hos' is fascinating (yes, that is a simplification). Jus' saying.
I find the sociological circumstances of gangster rap fascinating, but I still can't stand the music - in much the same way that human sacrifice en masse is a fascinating way of dealing with overpopulation in the Yucatan, but I couldn't personally stomach it. Well, "can't stand" isn't really fair. Most music just does nothing for me - it blends into the background noise because it doesn't pique my interest enough for me to attend it. Gangster rap is the same, only also slightly annoying. The whole aesthetic doesn't appeal to me at all.
I already understood all of that. I wasn't saying that there isn't talent, or even genius, at work within the Gangsta genre. Genius or talent can be displayed in any conceivable area of life. Understanding it doesn't mean that I have to like it. You may recall from things I've said here or in the old forum, that I am attracted to music more by the way it sounds than by the lyrical content. It was the sounds that Joanna created that led me to search for more and more. It wasn't until later that I started to appreciate the talent or genius behind her lyrics. I am turned off by the sound of much of the Gangsta, Hip Hop, and Country genres. But...I love some music that falls into those genres. Why? I have no idea. There's something in the sound of it that I like, and I can't quite put a finger on what it is.

It varies with me. Some music would be fine if the singer just mumbled to the music...as long as it contributed to the overall aesthetic of the sound. Joanna is a master at using just the right words. Her lyrics don't have to make a lot of sense to me because she plays her lyrics like another instrument. The tonal qualities of the words, and their placement within the music, is just phenomenal! On the other hand, there are songs by many artists that attract me by the way they sound, and then the singer just sings the same few words over and over. Aagh!
