It took me a while, but, I now understand this thread. From the link:
I can't find any of a thing which should exist: online criticism of the work of Joanna Newsom (under either literary criticism or musicology); so I've rolled up my sleeves. Her third album and I are ripe for obsession.
I mean "criticism" as in pre-engaged, detailed examination (something to hold onto while in the sea) rather than the shit telling-you-if-it's-good which is the only treatment that pop music usually gets. It's going to be bloody obvious very quickly that I think this thing is good; this is for folk who already own the album. And probably not even then.
It's been a while since I've had to get upon my 'preserving' art soap-box: something which sprung from Nietzsche's "The Use and Abuse of History" and which has had a most profound effect, when employed as I've done.
That a-tech searched for criticism, another person's judgments, is bad enough; Then, to embark on a "pre-engaged, detailed examination"--this brought to mind the image of a fellow unzipping his pants and urinating on the newly purchased music.
Tadpoles Unite my ass!
No, I didn't read his criticism. That's the point!
