Headless_Caboose's closing comments chimed with me, too, although I did (reluctantly) allow myself to award ties. I do think there is a reluctance for us to change our past voting patterns, out of loyalty to songs we've loved (and still do, of course) for many years. I tend to need the newer songs to prove themselves over a year or three before accepting that they may be even better than some of the old favourites. It's interesting to note that perhaps the most 'underperforming' song this year, based on prior results, is Sapokanikan, which was probably the one we'd got longest to be familiar with in 2015. It achieved 4th place last time, but maybe this year will be settling into a truer position. However, I also suspect that those of us that are still here on MM might be the more 'conservative' among Joanna's fans, and so more resistant to changing our old patterns. These two points contradict one another.

Anyway - there are just about 26 hours left to vote for these sets, as I aim to close the polls at the end of Saturday (UK time).

Top spot in all three divisions is still far from certain, with the overall winner of the top division likely to go down to the last pairing. The top five in the First Division comprise the 'big four' from Ys, plus Have One On Me which might still split these songs. The top two remain unbeaten.
In Division Two, there have been some interesting amnd unexpected results so far. Every song has lost at least once, with Divers slipping up against Go Long, which in turn was beaten by Peach, Plum, Pear. All the songs in the top five could still realistically end up as winners of this division.
There are also five songs breaking away at the top of Division Three, which is the closest of all. Not only has every song lost at least once, but every song has also recorded at least one win.

Votes are below, but I have a completely unrelated question that I wondered if you could answer, Steve, with your encyclopaedic knowledge of JN's repertoire! I recently came across this gig review from 2005, extracted below:

Smiling and elfin in a peasant dress and fur leg warmers, Newsom launched the evening with an a cappella number that had her fans -- who ran the gamut from senior citizens to young mothers toting babies -- clapping along like pilgrims in a revival tent. She followed with a set that mixed in a few new songs (including an anti-war reverie dedicated to her father) with tracks from "The Milk-Eyed Mender." She squawked sweetly through the folkie "Bridges and Balloons" and trilled lonesomely for the Celtic-infused "Sadie." For "The Book of Right-On," she drew a rich '60s-pop sound from her harp, then followed with sweeping glides and chords for the ghostly "Swamsea." [sic] An equally haunting rendition of "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" closed the set.

Any idea what that "anti-war reverie" could be? The only thing I could think is that it was what became the first part of "Only Skin".

Hi Adam. I'm glad that Under a CPell's and my comments were helpful.

Although "What We Have Known" was pre-MEM (early 2004) in that it first came out on Yarn & Glue (2003), don't forget that a re-recorded version also appeared on the Sprout & The Bean CD single later in 2004. It then came out as its own 12" vinyl single in 2011 - I have never unwrapped my copy, but I understand it contains the same version as the one from the 2004 single. The latter had no 'B' side. Strangely, if you exclude the Colleen EP, she has released only two singles, and both contained "What We Have Known".

Of the songs that appeared on Yarn & Glue, only the title track and "What We Have Known" did not appear on MEM, but the other pre-MEM self-released CD, Walnut Whales, contained three songs that have never appeared again - "Erin", "Flying a Kite", and "The Fray". All three are well worth a listen: considering "Erin" was the first song on her first tentative CD, I think it's remarkably mature; "The Fray" is touchingly personal and I do find it whimsical (a word that is I think over-used and almost always wrongly used to describe much of her early work). And if you haven't heard it, you must youtube "Flying A Kite" which is perhaps Joanna's "What's The New Mary Jane"... And do listen out for the line "You blush, Ink Boy", the mondegreen which gives rise to the word you'll see on the right of this posting! Incidentally, Walnut Whales also contains a very interesting and extended version of "En Gallop" which I listen to a lot - as one of my very favourite Joanna songs [which you've probably guessed anyway!], my listening is split about 50/50 between this version with a whole additional section and lyrics, and the edited and more crisply recorded version on MEM.
