So ... what next?

Hi all

I haven't been around for ages. I am now confused by the seeming lack of any news of JN's activity or plans (other than marriage!). Could someone kindly catch me up on rumours/gossip or hard news about impending releases or shows. Like others, I'm prepared to be patient, but I do feel ready for some new work (or tours). I miss her. Thanks

the 'kitchen cabinetry' was a joke.
the spam that posts on these boards is always about kitchen cabinetry. with the lack of updates on here, some of the boards post 'new threads' but really you click on it just to find that its a spam post/ad for kitchen cabinetry lol.

anyway...you're best off checking the 'found on the net' thread... or just keeping an eye on it. thats where all the most updated/current news or rumors are found but just as an overview:
there really is no reason to be confused at the lack of news or updates because theres hardly been anything

-her and andy got engaged around feb of last year
-she played pitchfork last year (i was there and it was incredible) and you may have seen videos of her playing 2 of the brand new songs and 2 of the other unofficially released songs (which she also played live and were put on youtube 2 years ago)
-she got married to andy last sept (i believe?)
-drag city has been hinting at some surprises for almost a year now but theres no official confirmation of any new album or release date. just some hints here and there in their newsletters which MIND YOU may or may not be about Joanna at all so don't get too excited.
-her and andy bought an amazingly gorgeous house a couple of months ago. theres a bunch of pictures of it online
-her and andy were recently spotted walking around beverly hills like 3 days ago. theres a small set of pics. and this is like the most recent pics we've seen of them (of course they're just candid/casual walking paparazzi pics)
-joanna has a role in the movie Inherent Vice which comes out later this year (maybe december?) so I'm sure she's been busy with that
-OH one other milkymooner had claimed to have some secret 'in' to a new song recording from the upcoming album. They said they heard it and it features only harp and piano simultaneously, I believe. So that should be interesting.

so thats a recap in a few short paragraphs. you haven't heard or seen much on this forum cause theres not much to be seen. we're all kinda just left here waiting on news. but check out that other thread 'found on the net' as it has more detailed info on what people have heard or read and links to pics of the house if you're interested, etc...

Thank you, 'ilovebja4ever', that's exactly the info I was after. I will remain patient ...

And since my kitchen drawers fell to pieces last week, I will hang around the forum awhile looking for a good deal!

Is Joanna endorsing the kitchens advertised here? Does she own one of these kitchens herself?

As far as I understand this is a fan-run site and the ads probably just help keep the site alive.

But who knows, they might help with your repairs?!

The kitchen cabinetry topics should no longer be appearing, since newly registered accounts are required to have their posts approved until they reach a certain number of approved posts. The other day I disapproved about 20 about kitchens in Bradford, which, bizarrely, robots think is our primary interest.

I'm pretty sure if you actually clicked on the links you wouldn't get directed to a helpful carpenter's website, but more likely your computer would end up being remotely used to email spam to all your contacts. So please don't click on the links if you actually want some new cabinets!

If there is a new album in the offing, we could speculate as to at least five of its songs (and granted that these are all speculative titles or just descriptions):

Look And Despair
harp song ["Hay and a clean stall"]
The Diver’s Wife (aka Diver)
piano song ["...space of half a day"]
Americana-style piano song

Now, if she were a lazy artist, just interested in fulfilling her contracted releases, she could easily recycle up to half a dozen collaborations and oddments she has put out since HOOM was released:

The Man Who Ran The Town [with Hard Skin]
The North Star Grassman And The Ravens
The Orchard
[with Philip Glass & Tim Fain]*
France [with Philip Glass & Tim Fain]*
The French Lieutenant Dreams [with Tim Fain]*
Kindness Be Conceived [with Thao & The get Down Stay Down]

on top of which it would be nice to have a proper studio recording of:

Ca' The Yowes To The Knowes

However, I don't for one moment believe that Joanna is a lazy artist, and the above would therefore be more suited to being bonus tracks (or as I like to call 'em, Roses In The Snow) for some re-release in the far-distant future.

I wonder, then, if all her other activities have meant she simply hasn't had the time to write and record enough material yet, and that we could still have a while to wait. Let's hope I'm wrong.

[* if any recordings of these actually exist, or if they could be redone in studio]

I remember hearing her talk/reading somewhere that it took her 7 years to write HOOM(song)... like not sitting down and working for 7 years straight, but slowly working at it. So I think its fair to say that some of her more grander songs may follow the same process, i.e. some of the songs that will go on this new album might have been started during the Ys/HOOM periods.

How long did it take you to make this record?
I think technically in terms of calender years, I think three or four years. Since I finished Ys. And not all of that time was intense. There was a year of just songwriting that was intense and there was a year that followed it doing the arrangements (with Ryan Francesconi). It took two months just to write out drafts of his arrangements. There was a lot of back and forth. The recording process which happened all over the place and took five months or four months. It was spread apart. And the making took about two months or a month and a half.

But in this interview she does say she did all the writing in a year.

Does anyone remember how long it took her write HOOM or am imagining things haha

Also this is a really cool interview!! :notworthy:

That "really cool" interview includes this really depressing quote:

It gets a little harder. It took me four years to do this one. Hopefully it won't take me eight years to do the next one.

So...there's that.

It's my first time posting, and I must say I'm impressed with the emoji selection... :hump:

yeah have to say we should be expecting something new soon, one of the things that drove me back here :)...so by extrapolation we should be expecting 4 lps of polished stuff, with full arrangements and a symphony backing the whole thing, full liner notes and a self written biography, ghost authored by the ghost of Everett Dirksen....no?

It's been a long old time since the last album. I hope she doesn't try to go bigger than HOOM. Three discs were more than enough. Joanna's at her best when she keeps things simple.

The entirety of Ys derogates this argument slightly ;)
