Thank you for your votes, Julia! Don't worry too much about round 1 - it was mostly the lesser known stuff and collaborations (plus Same Old Man, which had a low average position, as it had previously appeared as 'only' a collaboration. Glad you are with us now, and pleas become back for Round 3 in a week or so.

Commentary

The 31 group winners, plus the two best-performing runner-up, are qualified for Round Three. Fortunately, the runners-up are clear-cut, with A Pin Light Bent (32 points) and Ribbon Bows (29 points) scoring more points than any other second-placed song. Those which just missed out were:
Bridges And Balloons / Inflammatory Writ ... both 28 points
No Provenance ... 27
Sprout And The Bean / Ca’ The Yowes To The Knowes ... both 26
Occident / Flying A Kite / You and Me, Bess ... 25 pts
It is possible that we will see the first three of these again if there is sufficient interest to justify running a "Division 3" of the final round.

The make-up of our final 33 is very consistent with previous years. Of the top 33 ranked songs across JNSTs I - V, only four did not make it, namely -
Colleen (19th) - EP track
Bridges And Balloons (29th) - from Milk-Eyed Mender
Does Not Suffice (In California, Refrain) (32nd) - from Have One On Me
No Provenance (33rd) - from Have One On Me.
Their places have gone to the following songs which were previously ranked outside the top 33:
Anecdotes (44th) - from Divers
Esme (34th) - from HOOM
Jackrabbits (46th) - from HOOM
Ribbon Bows (35th) - from HOOM.

Our 33 qualifiers are all from the four main albums, and line up as follows:
THE MILK-EYED MENDER ........................................ 5
Peach, Plum, Pear
Sadie
En Gallop! / “En Gallop”
Swansea
Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie
YS ....................................................................... 5
Emily
Cosmia
Only Skin
Sawdust & Diamonds
Monkey & Bear
HAVE ONE ON ME ................................................. 14
In California
Have One On Me
Go Long
Baby Birch
Kingfisher
Good Intentions Paving Company
Autumn
Easy
Soft As Chalk
'81
On A Good Day
Esme
Jackrabbits
Ribbon Bows*
DIVERS ................................................................ 9
Sapokanikan
Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne
Anecdotes
You Will Not Take My Heart Alive
Divers
Leaving the City
Goose Eggs
Time, As a Symptom
A Pin-Light Bent*

The next round draw will ensure that no group contains more than one song from each album, except for HOOM, where there are more qualified songs than groups.

VI JOANNA NEWSOM SONG TOURNAMENT 2016

DRAW FOR ROUND THREE

In this round, please arrange the songs within each group in descending order of your favourite - ie rank your favourite as #1, second favourite as #2 (and by implication the remaining one will be #3). Your top ranked song will receive 6 points, second ranked will receive 2, and third will receive zero. You also have the opportunity to nominate any TWO songs to receive a single bonus point. Any songs placed tied will share the points available for those positions; any songs not mentioned will be deemed to occupy the highest available position(s). As ever, it is the SONG, not the version you are voting for, so please base your votes on your favourite recording/version of each song: this may well be the album version, but if you prefer one of the many live recordings, or an early EP version, for example, please base your vote on that.

Group 1
__ Go Long
__ Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie
__ Anecdotes

Group 2
__ A Pin-Light Bent*
__ Kingfisher
__ Sadie

Group 3
__ Emily
__ Time, As a Symptom

Group 5

__ Sapokanikan
__ On A Good Day

Group 6

__ Only Skin

Group 7
__ Peach, Plum, Pear
__ Soft As Chalk
__ Goose Eggs

Group 8
__ Divers
__ Monkey & Bear
__ In California

Group 9
__ Good Intentions Paving Company
__ Swansea

Group 10
__ Baby Birch
__ Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne
__ Jackrabbits

Group 11
__ You Will Not Take My Heart Alive
__ Cosmia

Bonus Point
Please nominate a maximum of two songs from any of those listed above.

EDIT/UPDATE: Apologies for not including the deadline at the outset. I intend to close the voting for this round at 11:59pm UK time on Friday 14th October 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter. As usual, any votes received before I formally close the round will be included.

Good work Steve, I was just wondering why you didn't mention any songs being "forced out" thanks to the new songs from Divers, then I realised it must have been in the last tournament too. I can't believe it's been out over a year now!

Let's see if I'm the first to vote this time...

Argh, some hard choices here. I had no idea how to rank Group 3 -- they are all really great but in completely different ways: "Emily", for its lyrics and sumptuous arrangement; "Time, As a Symptom" for being a great album-closer; and "'81" for its simplicity and pithiness. Group 7 I also found notable as the songs are thematically similar: they all concern recalled and recounted conversations. I don't know if you intended that, but these groupings create some interesting juxtapositions, actually.

Plusses indicate my bonus points, as before.

Group 1
_3_ Go Long
_2_ Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie
_1_ Anecdotes

Group 2
_3_ A Pin-Light Bent*
_2_ Kingfisher
_1_ Sadie

Group 3
_1_ Emily
_2+ Time, As a Symptom
_3_ '81

Group 4
_2_ Autumn
_3_ Have One On Me
_1_ En Gallop! / “En Gallop”

Group 5
_2_ Ribbon Bows*
_1_ Sapokanikan
_3_ On A Good Day

Group 6
_3_ Easy
_2_ Leaving the City
_1_ Only Skin

Group 7
_2_ Peach, Plum, Pear
_3_ Soft As Chalk
_1_ Goose Eggs

Group 8
_3_ Divers
_1_ Monkey & Bear
_2_ In California

Group 9
_1_ Good Intentions Paving Company
_3_ Swansea
_2_ Sawdust & Diamonds

Group 10
_2+ Baby Birch
_3_ Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne
_1_ Jackrabbits

Group 11
_1_ You Will Not Take My Heart Alive
_2_ Cosmia
_3_ Esme

Hi Adam

Thank you for your votes (yep - you are the first!) and also the interesting comments, which I always enjoy reading. You're right - Divers was included in JNST5: it didn't officially come out until late October, but the tournament was run late in the year to be sure that its songs were included. It is interesting to see, though, that all four albums continue to be well-represented in the last 33. I wonder, too, whether the absence of any songs that are NOT on one of the official albums indicates that people just don't know or listen to them often enough to be familiar with them, or whether Joanna very shrewdly left them off. Personally, I think Flying A Kite (from which my identifier comes, obliquely), What We Have Known, Erin, and Ca' The Yowes To The Knowes would not be out of place in this company, and there are also a handful of the collaborations that I enjoy listening to (No Style, The Man Who Ran The Town, Shame, for example) - although, stylistically, none of those would really fit onto any of her solo albums.

As for arranging the draw so that groups contained subjectively linked songs - no: I haven't done that. It tends to be a more mechanical process, really, more than an artistic one. The main consideration is to 'reward' songs that have scored highly in by keeping them apart in subsequent stages. A secondary aim is to try to separate songs from the same album, although that isn't always possible. A few years ago, I did toy with the idea of a subsidiary vote where songs were grouped somewhat according to style (eg - long piano songs, etc), but I am not sure I would feel comfortable squeezing her remarkably varied body of work into restrictive categories: also, with dwindling numbers on here, I think it best just to focus on the core vote for now. Another idea I had was to try to ensure that songs were not paired with the same opponent year-on-year: I started a huge analysis of all the previous JNSTs, but I got rather bogged down and decided that idea could wait.

Anyway - as I say, I am always delighted to read any feedback, both on the songs themselves, and on the Tournament.

Round 3:

Group 1
1 Anecdotes=
1 Go Long
2 Clam Crab Cockle Cowrie

Group 2
1 Sadie
2 A Pin-Light Bent*=
2 Kingfisher

Group 3
1 Time, As a Symptom, Bonus Point
2 Emily=
2 '81

Group 4
1 Have One On Me
2 Autumn=
2 En Gallop! / “En Gallop”

Group 5
1 Sapokanikan
2 On A Good Day
3 Ribbon Bows*

Group 6
1 Leaving the City=
1 Only Skin, Bonus Point
2 Easy

Group 7
1 Peach, Plum, Pear
2 Soft As Chalk=
2 Goose Eggs

Group 8
1 Divers
2 In California
3 Monkey & Bear

Group 9
1 Good Intentions Paving Company
2 Swansea=
2 Sawdust & Diamonds

Group 10
1 Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne
2 Baby Birch
3 Jackrabbits

Group 11
1 Cosmia
2 You Will Not Take My Heart Alive=
2 Esme

I found it very difficult to choose this time, sorry for all the ties! Especially Group 6 seemed kind of cruel to have to choose between.
It's a pity there aren't more members voting, I always think the song tournament is great fun (and for me personally, occupying myself with Joanna's music is a good way to spend the time waiting for the remastered Boys for Pele album by Tori Amos and the Before the Dawn live album by Kate Bush). Thank you for organising this again!

I think I would find it very difficult to choose which songs go in which group together. I find it matters a great deal against which other songs a particular song is pitted for the resulting number of points it receives. For instance: I think I would rate Time, As A Symptom and Only Skin about the same in my love for them, but TAAS gets 7 points and OS only 4, because I love Leaving The City so much too. But I suppose there isn't really a way around this?

Thank you for your votes, Under a CPell (and also for the tipoff about the forthcoming Kate Bush album). You pinpoint a flaw with any tournament run on these lines, whether a JNST, a sporting competition, or even an employment interview process, in that it iis possible for the second-best entry to be eliminated early if it is unlucky enough noug to come up against the best at that stage. Seeding the draw helps to reduce the chances of this, but of course that is a blunt instrument and doesn't take account of each voter's own preferences. For example in the JNST, was Ribbon Bows really a 'best runner up', or was En Gallop just a 'worst winner'? I have my opinion on that, but it may not match that of others. I think the only ways round the problem would be
1) simply to present voters with a list of every song in the tournament and ask them to rank them, which has the drawback of being less 'interactive' and perhaps less exciting in that there isn't really any progress to follow, nor climactic finish; or
2) to do something like the 'song ranker' that Solfatara (I think) posted on here, where we all vote on each pairing and plug the combined result back into the algorithm; or
3) have an enormous round-robin, pairing each song once with every other song - but that would take all year and probably lose MM its last few readers through fatigue!
Option 1 is perhaps feasible, and may be a way of reaching out to the Facebook people too - they only need to vote once and wouldn't need to keep hopping back here, son perhaps I might use such a system in 2017, especially if mm readership remains at a low level.
Thank you as ever for your through provoking comments and I am glad you are enjoying the JNST.
