All the posts were occupied when I arrived so I am under the flyover

However, if that's you in the grey coat and new hair, I'll kick myself!

Went to her second Tokyo show last night! It was totally fabulous. Held in a church, pretty packed (second row!), and she was chatty and relaxed-seeming and tried out a lot of Japanese. A lot of harp-tuning in between songs but she joked around a lot as she did it—after one really long tune, she finally sat down at the harp, paused, and then said "Aaaaand this is a piano song." Band died laughing.

1. Bridges and Balloons
2. Anecdotes
-Lovely rendition, with her switching from piano to harp mid-song.
3. Divers
-The two mbiras (thumb pianos) accompanying this added a really haunting element, along with the synths which were almost church-organy.
4. Monkey and Bear
-So happy to finally hear this one live! Pete was great on drums, though still have a soft spot for Neal Morgan.
5. Waltz of the 101st Lightborne
6. In California
-Husband and I wept like babies.
7. Sapokanikan
8. Leaving the City
-This song is especially exciting live.
9. Have One On Me
-My favourite song by her, thrilled to hear it again.
10. Peach, Plum, Pear
-Incredibly beautiful arrangement—started just with her facing Ryan Francesconi playing on his Tambura, and no one was sure what song it was until she started singing. Really climaxed into a beautiful violin-heavy arrangement, not unlike parts of the Owen Pallett cover.
11. Cosmia
12. Time, As a Symptom
-I never really "got" this song before hearing it live and realizing it's, at its core, a piano ballad that sounds like it comes from another dimension.
13. Good Intentions Paving Company
-A rare one on this tour, and tons of fun.

Encore:
14. Sawdust & Diamonds
-She didn't play this when I saw her last, so I was so happy and moved to finally see it—this song more than any other seems to me to be the culmination of her and her harp, the extreme labour and exhaustion that goes into playing such a long and difficult song really showing through. It was stunning.
15. Baby Birch
-I was hoping beyond hope for this one. A hell of an intense ending. The violinists got the audience to clap along during the really intense rabbit-skinning part; I thought it'd be inappropriate at first, but somehow really added to a feeling of collective catharsis.

What a concert.

Fox Theater in Oakland
Easter Sunday March 27

Bridges and Balloons
Anecdotes
Divers
Emily
Waltz of the 101st Lightborne
In California
Sapokanikan
Leaving the City
Have One on Me
Peach Plum Pear
Cosmia
Time, As a Symptom * with Robin Pecknold
Good Intentions Paving Company* with Robin Pecknold, Andy Strain on trombone, Neil Morgan percussion and vocals

Encore
Baby Birch with Robin Pecknold, Andy Strain on trombone, Neil Morgan percussion and vocals

Brief thoughts- Robin Pecknold opened and was horrible. Not sure if it was the sound or fact he didn't say hello or a word, but it was awkward and bad. He also finished his set about 10 mins early according to venue workers

1/2 the band was Newsoms! Joanna, Pete and Emily on stage! (Emily looked nervous) also according to Joanna 40% of the audience was Newsom family :).

The show was super high energy, JN was bouncing - everything was very upbeat.

Best moment of the night was when the old band was reunited when Andy Strain and Neil Morgan came out for GIPC...I loved the show and the Newsoms, but musically the last tour was far superior IMO.

6 more weeks til she is back in town in convo with Dave Eggers!

I saw them at Paramount Theatre in Seattle, tonight. I thought Robin Pecknold was great. Anxious and perhaps a little sad, but musically fantastic. He did "On A Good Day" as a duet with Joanna that made excellent use of both their vocal talents. Some of the songs really came to life on the stage. The studio version o "Leaving The City" doesn't do it justice.
